For those who don't miss the old pong, now you have a modernized version.

Overview Pong is a two-dimensional electronic sports game, originally released in 1972 by Atari, conceived as a simulation of table tennis. Considered a milestone in the history of video games, Pong popularized commercial electronic games and paved the way for the modern games industry. It was created by Allan Alcorn as a training exercise, at the request of Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell. The game has become culturally iconic and is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., in recognition of its impact. Historical Development Inspiration: Pong was inspired by the Magnavox Odyssey tennis game (1968) and experimental versions such as tennis for PDP-1. First prototype: Built using a black and white television inside a wooden cabinet, with circuits manually wired. Initial testing: Installed at Andy Cappโ€™s Tavern, California; success led to large-scale production. First home version: Released in 1975 exclusively by Sears as Home Pong, connectable to a television. Later, Atari released versions under its own brand (1976). Legal conflicts: Magnavox sued Atari for patent infringement related to the concept derived from the Odyssey, resulting in post-release settlements. Gameplay Pong is extremely simple, yet addictive: Objective: To score points by preventing the opponent from returning the ball. Controls: Each player manipulates a vertical paddle (stick) to hit the ball, moving it only up or down. Ball interaction: The paddle is divided into eight segments, which determine the angle of return of the ball. The central segment returns the ball at 90ยฐ; outer segments cause the ball to be deflected at smaller or larger angles. The speed of the ball increases with each hit, resetting if the ball passes the player's paddle. Dynamics: Two players can compete against each other or against the computer, making the game both competitive and social. The simple and straightforward design makes the game immediately understandable, generating a feeling of satisfaction and a loop of repetition, a key characteristic for its immersion. Elements of the MDA Framework (Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetics) Mechanics: Vertical movement of the paddles Bounce of the ball towards the opponent Simple scoring system Increasing ball speed Dynamics: Direct competition between players or player vs. computer Partial predictability of angles for strategic learning Gradual increase in difficulty to engage players Aesthetics: Visual simplicity: black and white graphics, basic geometric shapes (paddles and ball) Clear feedback: "beep" sounds when hitting the ball, creating a sense of immediate response Emotion of challenge and achievement: each point reinforces engagement Technical Specifications (Arcade Version) Graphics: two-dimensional in black and white Sound: discreet sound effects ("beep") responsive to interactions Controls: two potentiometers, one per player, to move paddles Platform: Arcades, later ported to consoles Domestic Games Legacy and Cultural Impact Commercial: Over 35,000 arcade units sold; home versions surpassed 150,000 units. Historical: Marked the beginning of the gaming industry and popularized interactive social competition. Cultural: Became iconic, awarded for its simplicity and engaging design, inspiring a whole generation of engineers and entrepreneurs in the technology and entertainment sector. Conclusion Pong represents the beginning of the modern video game era. Its simplicity, accessibility, addictive gameplay, and cultural impact solidify it as a timeless classic. The immediate control experience, dynamic challenges, and social interactivity make Pong a fundamental case study in the history of game design, having inspired successors and clones on various digital platforms.
