On June 1, 2017, Ederson was sold by Benfica to Manchester City, for 40 million euros, which made him, at the time, the second most expensive goalkeeper in history, behind only Gianluigi Buffon. He also became the most expensive transfer in Benfica's history, alongside Belgian Axel Witsel, who was bought by Russia's Zenit in 2013 for the same amount.
