Riverbend: Pixel Fishing

Riverbend is a fishing game about one river and a lot of patience. Cast the line and watch the float. When it dips, set the hook — then hold the bar: press to lift it, release to let it fall, and keep the fish inside it until the meter fills. It takes ten seconds to learn. It is harder at midnight, in the rain, with a catfish on the end of it. WHAT IS IN IT ◆ Five waters, and they fish differently. The Town River you start on, a forest river under the canopy, a still forest pond, a cold mountain lake, and the ocean off the beach — salt water with its own species that live nowhere else. Thirty-five fish in all, each with its own seasons, hours, weather and way of fighting inside the bar. A sunfish drifts. A pike bolts. A catfish simply refuses. ◆ New water opens as you get better. The forest river wants three species in the journal, the pond wants level 3, the lake level 5, the ocean level 7 and seven species. A chart on the wall shows what each place holds and what it is still asking of you. ◆ A field journal that fills in as you fish. Every species is a silhouette until you land one, then it becomes a pressed specimen with its record length, your catch count and your best quality. Sort by name, size, rarity or how often you have caught it. ◆ A fish house on the bank. Keep what you catch and it swims in a glass tank at a speed its own species decides. Give one back to the river and it earns River Favour — and Favour is the only thing that buys another tank. To keep more fish, you have to let fish go. ◆ Four seasons and a working clock. The light moves through the day, the weather changes the water, and rain, storm, wind and snow each fish differently. ◆ Rods, bait and tackle that change the odds in ways you can feel: a longer cast reaches deeper water and better fish. HOW IT PLAYS Hold to charge your cast, release to throw. Wait for the bite — it comes in five seconds or twenty, and nothing hurries it. Tap the moment the float goes under.
