With 251,809 speakers according to the National Institute of Indigenous Languages (INALI), Ch'ol is a language spoken in the states of Campeche, Tabasco, and primarily in the state of Chiapas. 1. Words of Spanish origin are designated as follows: (esp.) 2. The abbreviation of the town's name to indicate a word not used in Tumbalá but in the neighboring town mentioned is designated as follows: Sabanilla (Sab.) - Tila (Tila). The other words are used in Tumbalá and in other Ch'ol towns except in the cases cited. 3. The cited form of the Ch'ol verb is the root. Nouns whose root is never found alone without a possessive prefix are cited preceded by an asterisk (*) to indicate that it is a root. For example: *ok (foot); *säklel (clarity). The roots of irregular verbs are also cited preceded by an asterisk. For example: *ujil (to know). Other nouns are cited in their general, non-possessive form. For example: a'bäk (coal); pech (duck). 4. Suffixes are preceded by a hyphen (-). Prefixes are followed by a hyphen. 5. Each entry in the dictionary includes an indication of the Ch'ol grammatical form. The transitive verb can take the following forms: reflexive, passive, applicative, participle, imperative, subjunctive, or infinitive. The passive form is conjugated in the same way as an intransitive verb and is therefore abbreviated (vi) in the dictionary. The participle form undergoes the same grammatical inflections as a stative verb and is classified as (adj) in the dictionary. The reflexive form simply adds a reflexive pronoun after the transitive form and is therefore classified as (vt), even though reflexive usage is more common than non-reflexive usage. The other forms of the transitive verb do not change their classification in the dictionary. 6. The meaning in Spanish follows. When a word has more than one meaning, the different meanings are listed one after the other. 7. In many cases, an illustrative sentence is included. The Spanish translation is idiomatic and therefore does not necessarily correspond to the grammatical form in Ch'ol. 8. In some cases, a derived form is cited below the main entry. 9. Sometimes the entry is followed by the instruction: (See...). This indicates that the related word should be looked up elsewhere in the dictionary. Sometimes a word with the same meaning used in another Ch'ol-speaking region is indicated; e.g.: xujch's (thief) (Sab). Ajxujch' When this word appears as the main entry, the name of the region where it is spoken is placed immediately after the entry. At the end of the article, the word (See) is followed by the Tumbalá word with the same meaning; e.g.: Ajxujch' (Sab.) (s) thief (See) xujch'. Forms derived from the original word are included as subentries. If they are single words, they also appear as main entries. Phrases that appear as subentries do not appear as main entries. Phrases containing an exemplary sentence appear only as main entries. 10. When related anthropological data exists, it is included in the explanation of the Ch'ol words in square brackets [] preceded by the words Cultural Information. Many of the exemplary sentences reflect Ch'ol beliefs. Contact Information Application developed by Computer Systems Engineer Noé López Vicente.
