This book was written in response to a question posed to him from the city of Palmyra. Its subject matter revolves around two major principles: the Names and Attributes of God, and Islamic Law and Divine Decree. Regarding the Names and Attributes, the author includes two principles: that some attributes are treated the same as others, and that attributes are treated the same as the essence of God. He then presents the examples of Paradise and the Soul, followed by seven rules concerning the Names and Attributes of God. As for the second principle—Shari'ah and Qadar—he addressed important issues in this regard, such as the reconciliation of Shari'ah and Qadar, the general and specific meanings of Islam, the concept of Tawhid al-'Ibadah (Oneness of God in Worship), and the obligation towards God's attributes, etc. This treatise is among the important books that clarify the principles of the creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah (the People of the Sunnah and the Community) concerning the Oneness of God's Names and Attributes. It is a response to a question posed to him by students of knowledge from the city of Palmyra. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: "Those whose questions I was obligated to answer asked me to write down for them the content of what they heard me say in some gatherings about Tawhid, Attributes, Shari'ah, and Qadar, due to the pressing need to clarify these two principles and the widespread confusion surrounding them." Author: Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Halim ibn 'Abd al-Salam ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Qasim al-Khidr al-Numayri al-Harrani al-Dimashqi al-Hanbali, Abu al-'Abbas, Taqi ad-Din Ibn Taymiyyah (661-728 AH / 1263-1328 CE). He was an Imam, a Shaykh al-Islam. He was born in Harran, and his father moved with him to Damascus, where he excelled and became renowned. He was summoned to Egypt for a fatwa he had issued, so he went there. A group of its inhabitants opposed him, and he was imprisoned for a time before being transferred to Alexandria. He was later released and traveled to Damascus in 712 AH, where he was arrested in 720 AH. He was released, then re-arrested, and died imprisoned in the Damascus Citadel. All of Damascus turned out for his funeral. He was a prolific scholar of various branches of wisdom and a reformer of the faith. He was a master of Quranic exegesis and jurisprudence, eloquent, and his writing and speech were in perfect harmony. In al-Durar al-Kaminah, it is mentioned that he debated with scholars, presented arguments, and excelled in knowledge and exegesis. He issued fatwas and taught while still under twenty. As for his writings, al-Durar states that they may exceed four thousand notebooks, while Fawwat al-Wafayat states that they amount to three hundred volumes. The fame that Sheikh Ibn Taymiyyah enjoyed, his widespread renown, and the multitude of his enemies did not come from nothing. He possessed knowledge of the various sects and their beliefs, and he provided detailed rational and legal refutations of each sect. Glory be to Him who created and enabled such brilliant minds to comprehend all of this in order to preserve the true religion as it was revealed to His Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. - This treatise is considered the essence of what Ibn Taymiyyah, may God have mercy on him, wrote in many books. If you understand and master what he wrote in this treatise, it will make it easier for you to understand the rest of his major works, such as "Dar' al-Ta'arud" (Refuting the Conflict). Ibn Taymiyyah divided the treatise into two parts: the first on the Oneness of God and His attributes, and the second on Islamic law. And the first section on destiny has two fundamental principles, two examples, and concludes with seven rules, although there is disagreement regarding the attribution of the seventh rule to him. I don't know, and I think I haven't—and perhaps never will—reached the stage of evaluating and critiquing Ibn Taymiyyah's books, but they are magnificent and astonishing. Nouf - Glory be to Him who bestowed upon Shaykh al-Islam the power of argument and eloquence. May God have mercy on him and place his refutation of innovations on the scale of his good deeds. Amal Saleh - I find no words more eloquent than those of Ibn al-Qayyim in his definition of the Shaykh, the Imam, the renewer, when he said of him: "The Shaykh of Islam and the most eminent scholar, the defender of the Sunnah and the suppressor of innovation." Whenever I read something of his on creed, I pray to God that I die upon the path of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions. The Shaykh did an excellent job in clarifying the creed of the Salaf, from the Companions, the Successors, and their followers in the first three centuries. The key to the book is affirming what God has affirmed for Himself of names and attributes without denial or distortion, and without likening or defining them.
