Zizhi Tongjian: History Mirror

Zizhi Tongjian (Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government) is a monumental chronological general history compiled under the direction of Sima Guang of the Northern Song Dynasty. It is regarded as one of the "Twin Masterpieces of Chinese Historiography," alongside the Shiji (Records of the Grand Historian). The work comprises 294 chapters, approximately three million characters, covering a period of 1,362 years from the twenty-third year of King Weilie of Zhou (403 BCE) to the sixth year of the Xiande reign of Emperor Shizong of Later Zhou (959 CE), documenting the rise and fall of sixteen dynasties. Its compilation took nineteen years to complete. The title was bestowed by Emperor Shenzong of Song, meaning "a mirror for examining past events to aid in governance," emphasizing the use of historical successes and failures as a guide for contemporary rule. The book is structured chronologically, with events as its primary focus. It concentrates on politics, military affairs, and inter-ethnic relations, while also addressing economics, culture, and evaluations of historical figures. Through detailed narration of key historical events and editorial comments introduced by "Sima Guang remarks," the work presents the compiler's clear historical insight and concern for statecraft. Sima Guang collaborated with scholars such as Liu Ban, Liu Shu, and Fan Zuyu in a division of labor. They first compiled a rough draft (changbian) and then meticulously refined it into the final text. Sima Guang also produced a thirty-chapter work titled Kaoyi (Examination of Discrepancies) to analyze and verify historical sources, reflecting a rigorous academic approach. The chronological format makes the causal connections in history clearly discernible. Moreover, the work draws on over 322 sources, including official histories, unofficial histories, and miscellaneous notes, making it of extremely high historical value. Zizhi Tongjian is not only a classic work of historiography but also a treasure trove of ancient political wisdom. Emperors, generals, ministers, and scholars of successive dynasties studied it with great seriousness. Its influence extends beyond historiography, deeply penetrating Chinese strategic thinking and governance culture.
