Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR) Signals & Interpretations

Learn how to interpret Canadian railway signals (CROR). Signal names & definitions are based on Transport Canada's CROR rev. Jan 28/25. Includes: • Rule numbers, their names and action required. • A "Kicker" calculator. An unofficial method of locating a specific rail car that may have a brake defect. You can either select your own signal pattern and mast style or have some "fun" and let the app quiz you with a random signal pattern [Gen Sig]. Are you interested in railroading or need to brush up on your signals for an upcoming review? Canadian Railway Signals is a great learning tool. With Signals you can perform what-if scenarios with various signal patterns. How would a signal definition be changed if a light was blinking instead of non-blinking? What effect does adding or removing a letter plate have? Are you a railway curious or a "RailFan"? Now you'll know exactly what that signal means. This utility handles all valid light and letter plate combinations. The following aspect combinations are included: • Mast style with single, double and triple aspects. • Staggered and non-staggered aspects. • Single and double aspect LowMast (formerly called dwarf) signals. • Letter plates (except double letter plate signals). ** NEW ** • Jan 7/26 Added [Signal Patterns] button. All the signal patterns for each rule can be shown with an option to browse through all the rules and their signal patterns. NOTES: • The "Kicker" calculator is something I thought of during my freight conductor course and should save a lot of time when you're trying to locate a specific railcar. • Transport Canada CROR signal definitions apply to all Canadian Railway companies. Rail transit systems such as Go Transit may change the signal patterns and definitions to better suit their particular needs. • A link is provided to Transport Canada's website which contains complete documentation relating to Canadian Railways, the regulations and their signalling systems. • I wrote the original program way back in 2012 to assist me with learning the signals and their definitions during my railway freight conductor course. It continues to be maintained/updated as needed. Legal Stuff: • I do not represent Transport Canada or any other Canadian government entity. • This utility is for your convenience and entertainment and I do not guarantee its accuracy or completeness. • All official documentation from Transport Canada is available on their website: https://tc.canada.ca/en/rail-transportation/rules/2024-2025/canadian-rail-operating-rules Privacy Policy • Is available at https:/rcp.ca/privacy/cror
