Each of the players has a minimum number of tricks that he has to accomplish, called a “target”. Each player gets 16 cards, and the last 4 undealt cards are placed face down to form the kitty. The dealer is chosen at random and names a trump suit, discards four from his cards and replaces them with the four cards from the kitty. Following the compulsory number of tricks - 8, 5 and 3, a player who wins more tricks than the target is said to be “up” by the number of tricks and the person who fails to reach the target is “down” by the number of tricks. In the second and subsequent hands, players who have been “up” give unwanted cards to players who were “down”. In exchange, the latter have to pass the highest card or cards that they hold from the same suit or suits.
